Trump Says “My Own Morality” Overrides International Law
This statement followed the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro by American special forces last Saturday.
In recent days, Trump and members of his administration have also reiterated that the United States intends to take control of Denmark’s autonomous territory of Greenland, regardless of opposition.
During an interview with a newspaper on Wednesday, Trump emphasized that he would not be limited in exercising his authority as commander-in-chief.
He declared: “My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me.” He added, “I don’t need international law.”
When pressed on whether Washington should adhere to global standards, Trump appeared to slightly temper his position. Nevertheless, he quickly clarified that “it depends on what your definition of international law is,” implying that the ultimate decision on its relevance to the US rests solely with him.
On Thursday, Trump signed a directive halting support for 66 international organizations, agencies, and commissions, including several UN institutions, which he described as entities “that operate contrary to US national interests, security, economic prosperity, or sovereignty.”
In his remarks to the newspaper, Trump reinforced his determination that Greenland must eventually fall under Washington’s authority, underscoring his administration’s uncompromising stance on the issue.
